Just a friendly reminder that Anno and Co. originally intended for Rei Ayanami to creep the hell out of us.

Rei was, for all intents and purposes, a personified backlash against the hordes of 80s and early 90s fanboys who slobbered over female characters, and who figured that having a 2D girl that obeyed your every whim and had no voice as your own personal fuckdoll would be pretty damned sweet.

In other words, they wanted a placid, soulless little girl to wank over.

And Anno delivered. Oh, boy, did he deliver.

And then she got fetishized anyway and Gainax made merchandise to ride that.

So you know.

And people wonder why Anno hates 99% of you all.

They subsequently lost against a Spanish militia force of only 2,400 men. In a single afternoon the invincible reputation of the New Model Army had been thrown away and the English retreated back to their fleet.Admiral Penn was fearful of returning to England to face Oliver Cromwell and the parliamentarians, so he instead opted for an invasion of Jamaica which only had 1,500 Spanish men and women and children. The invasion was a success and Penn embarked for England hoping Cromwell would see his capture of Jamaica as some kind of victory. On his return Cromwell was outraged and had Penn imprisoned in the Tower of London.Penn was later released and he retired to the estate he had received from confiscated land in Ireland. He lay quiet until the restoration of the English monarchy in 1660. William Penn’s son (also named William Penn) went on to found the colony of Pennsylvania in North America - Pennsylvania literally means, Penn’s, land of Forrest.The English managed to repel two attempts to retake Jamaica by the Spanish over the next decade, and in 1670 Jamaica and the Cayman islands where officially ceded to the English crown at the Treaty of Madrid. Jamaica would remain a British possession until 1962 when it officially left the British West Indies Federation.
